Good things come in small packages. The shop is unassuming, but the staff are friendly and happy to share the best bits their menu has to offer. The food and drinks are delicious and filling! We initially ordered a takeaway, but they offered us a table in the garden, which is a beautiful respite from the hustle of York, especially with a blue sky for a ceiling. We will be back to sample more of their great hospitality and menu!

A Japanese tea house that serves classic dishes such as donburi, teishoku, and onigiri. The storefront sells select freshly-made desserts and Japanese treats or merchandise as well. ----- Pork Shougayaki: thin cut pork loin and onions marinated in ginger, soy sauce & mirin (£13.80). Teishoku is served with steamed rice, miso soup, pickles and vegetable side. Everything in the set dishes was good. Pork was juicy and lightly marinated. The vegetable side was seaweed that accompanied nicely with the rice. ----- Onigiri & Miso Soup Set: two lightly seasoned sticky rice balls with your choice of fillings (£7.80). Add side of pickles and vegetables for £2.20. Filling choices were avocado, umeboshi, gohan desu yo, teriyaki mayo chicken, tuna mayo, smoked salmon. My brother picked tuna mayo and umeboshi. I tried a bite of the umeboshi unigiri. The rice was fresh and the pickled plum was extremely sour as expected. ----- Matcha Latte: frothy steamed milk whisked into matcha (£4.55). The quality of matcha was decent, although the drink itself was incomparable to the gyokuro that had such a refined taste. ----- Gyokuro: full bodied umami flavor (£4.85). A green tea with quite the peculiar flavor. It does require extra brewing time. ----- Make sure to book in advance. A couple that walked in after we were seated for our 12 PM Saturday reservation were told that the restaurant was fully booked until 2 PM. Seating in the outdoor garden was available, but it was too sunny and hot. Guest Wi-Fi is available.

Cute and cozy place serving Japanese food. I found the food tasty and there are lots of vegan/gluten free options. It is pretty squishy in there and seems that there is only one member of staff preparing all dishes and drinks

What an amazing place ~ gluten free galore and many vegan options Wait staff ~~ very nice and friendly Drinks ~~ delicious drinks at reasonable prices I am vegan and my friend GF and this was such an easy place for us to find food that is delicious, affordable and welcoming to our bodies. Our other friend who has no dietary restrictions was quite pleased. Very friendly that from the drinks to the dessert they took the time to provide feedback. Bustling with a continuous flow of customers and nice energy level BUT never once felt rushed and were really able to enjoy our selves. Save room for dessert.

I was in York on a day trip and wanted a quick bite to eat. I was really surprised how good the food was and also that it was quite authentic homestyle Japanese cooking with rice, pickles, and meat. The rice is not as sticky as it should be, but so close! No sushi or ramen. Most of the food items are also gluten-free, which is a delight. The menu also had an extensive selection of sake and tea and the shop itself has cute Japanese desserts and gifts for sale. All in all, Ippuku Tea House was a refreshing and welcome slice of Japanese culture in York.

This is one of the best Japanese places I've been to in terms of homemade style Japanese that isn't just the usual sushi and ramen you find in most places. Having been to Japan as well as dined in many Japanese restaurants abroad and the UK, I loved how the food here tasted more homely yet very tasty. They have some great dishes and can make most of them vegan by substituting for tofu. The Mapo Tofu is really delicious, I highly recommend it. They also have Tamago (egg) donburi, Teriyaki Chicken or Tofu, shouga-yaki (fried pork) and some classics like Nasu Dengaku, Gyoza, Yaki-Onigiri and a great matcha tea and parfait menu. They also have an extensive Sake and Tea menu, which was great as I don't normally see so many choices for Sake in other restaurants. The staff were polite and friendly, the service was efficient and they accept card payment. Ippuku also sell a few Japanese cooking essentials like Miso paste, Japanese rice, Mirin, okonomiyaki sauce, Matcha tea, Dashi stock, Konbu etc. Overall for delicious homemade style Japanese food and a great selection of Sake and Japanese desserts like Dorayaki and Matcha Ice-cream , Ippuku is the best!
